Pages, welcome screens and endings

Split a long form into pages, greet respondents with a welcome screen, and decide what they see, and where they go, after they submit.

Pages

Every form starts as one page. Select Add page at the bottom of the canvas to add another. With more than one page, each page gets a header ("Page 2 of 3") where you can give it a title, and the settings panel lets you write a description, move the page up or down, or delete it together with its questions.

Respondents move through the pages with Next and Back and see a progress indicator unless you turn off Show progress. Answers are checked page by page, so a mistake is caught before the next page rather than at the very end.

Empty pages are not allowed on a live form. If a multi-page form has a page with no questions, publishing fails with "Page 2 is empty. Add a question or delete the page."

Pages are also the unit of routing: the Logic tab can send people from one page to a later page, to a particular ending, or out of the form. See Routing between pages and endings.

Welcome screen

Add a welcome screen puts a screen in front of the first question. You can set:

  • a title and a few lines of text, which support the same light Markdown as help text;
  • a button label (the default is "Start");
  • an image.

Skip it for short forms. It earns its place when you need to set expectations ("this takes about five minutes") or when the form is a timed quiz. A timed quiz always gets a start screen, even if you did not add one, because the clock starts when the respondent presses the start button. See Timers, retakes and results.

Remove it at any time with the trash button on the welcome card.

Endings

An ending is the screen shown after a successful submit. A new form has one, titled "Thanks, your response is in." Each ending can have:

  • a title and optional details;
  • an image;
  • a Redirect to address, a web address that should start with https://;
  • a Button label, which turns the redirect into a button.

What respondents see depends on those last two settings:

  • With a redirect address and no button label, the ending shows its message, then sends the respondent to that address after a few seconds. A Go now link is shown alongside.
  • With a redirect address and a button label, the respondent sees a button and decides for themselves.
  • With neither, the ending is just a message.

Select Add another ending to make more, up to 20. Only one is shown to a given respondent. By default that is the first; routing rules on the Logic tab choose a different one. Two other outcomes exist besides endings: routing to a web address, and routing to Disqualify. A disqualified respondent sees a short "Thanks for your time" message, and the response is still saved, marked Disqualified in the results.

Personalising the text

Titles, descriptions, help text and ending text can include an earlier answer with {{q_xxxx}}, where q_xxxx is the question's id. Copy an id from the question's More actions menu with Copy question ID. The value is filled in as the respondent types. See Calculations, piping and hidden fields.

What else the ending can show

Two settings on the form (in the settings panel under Responses) add to the ending screen: Show results summary to respondents adds a "How everyone answered" section, and Show "Submit another response" adds a link to fill the form in again. Both are described in Respondent experience settings.
