Timers, retakes and results

The quiz settings

Under Quiz mode in Form settings, once Make this a quiz is on, five more settings appear.

Like the rest of the form definition, these take effect when you publish.

What respondents see

With Immediately after submit, the ending screen has a section headed Your result.

• With Show score on, they see a score such as "8 out of 10", a percentage and a bar.
• With Show correct answers on, they see a review of each scored question: Correct, Not quite or To be reviewed, their own answer, the right answer where they got it wrong, and your feedback text for that question.

Turn both on for a learning quiz. Turn correct answers off for an exam that others will take later, so answers are not passed around. Turn the score off if you would rather share results in person.

With After I review, respondents see only "Your responses were received. Scores are shared after the answers have been reviewed." You then read and grade responses in the Responses tab. Formwork does not send scores to respondents itself, so contact them yourself, using the email you collected or in some other way.

If a quiz has questions that need grading by hand, respondents see "Your responses were received. Some answers need to be graded by hand, so your score is not ready yet." Points you award later are stored with the response for your team and your exports; the respondent's own result screen is not updated afterwards.

Retakes

With Allow retakes on, the ending shows Try again, which starts a new response. Every attempt is stored as its own response, so you can compare them; nothing links attempts by the same person unless you ask for sign-in or an email address.

Time limits

Set Time limit (minutes) to run a timed quiz. The rules that make it fair are enforced on the server, not just in the browser:

• The clock starts when the respondent presses Start. The start screen appears automatically, even if you did not add a welcome screen, and says "You have N minutes. The clock starts when you press Start and cannot be paused."
• The start time is recorded on the server. Refreshing the page, or closing it and coming back, does not restart or pause the clock.
• A countdown is shown on the page, with warnings at 5 minutes, 1 minute and 30 seconds.
• When the time runs out, the browser submits whatever has been filled in. Required questions are not enforced at that point, so a partly finished quiz is still recorded.
• If someone tries to submit after the limit plus a 10-second allowance for slow connections, the server refuses with "Time is up, so this response could not be submitted."
• A timed quiz cannot be submitted without pressing Start first, and that needs JavaScript. Otherwise the server says "This quiz is timed. Press Start first, with JavaScript turned on, so the clock can run."

The limit can be up to 600 minutes. Because the browser does the counting on the page but the server has the final say, a respondent who changes their computer's clock gains nothing.
