Working in the builder

The layout

The top bar holds the form title, a status badge, the save state, four tabs (Build, Share, Settings, Responses), Preview and Publish.

Inside Build, a second row of tabs switches the view:

• Questions is the editing canvas.
• Logic shows the rules for each question and page, with a small map of the paths through the form. See Show-if rules.
• Design opens the theme panel next to a live preview. See The Design tab.
• Preview shows the draft as a respondent would see it.

On the Questions tab there is an outline on the left (form settings, each page, each question and each ending), the canvas in the middle, and a settings panel on the right for whatever is selected. On a narrow screen the panel hides behind the Settings panel button.

Adding and editing questions

Select Add question, or press Cmd/Ctrl+Enter to add one below the selected question. In an empty question title, typing / opens the type picker. The picker searches by type name and group, and its footer links to From question bank and Import from another form (see Collaborating and reusing work).

Each card has the type label, the question number, and buttons for duplicate, move up, move down and delete. The More actions menu adds Change type, Move to page…, Save to question bank and Copy question ID. You can also drag a card by its grip to reorder it, even onto another page.

Some details that save time:

• Changing a question's type keeps its title, help text, required flag, logic and placeholder. Choices are kept when you move between multiple choice, checkboxes, dropdown and ranking.
• Help text under a question, and the form description, accept **bold**, *italic* and [link text](https://example.com).
• In an option list, Enter adds a new option, Backspace on an empty option removes it, and pasting several lines creates one option each.
• Questions are numbered automatically. Headings, text blocks, images, videos and dividers are layout blocks and are not numbered or answered.

Keyboard shortcuts

Open the full list with ? or the keyboard icon in the toolbar.

Undo keeps up to 100 steps, and rapid typing in one field counts as a single step.

Limits

A form can have up to 30 pages, 300 questions and blocks in total, and 200 options per question. A form can have up to 20 endings and 20 calculated fields. The saved draft must stay under 2 MB; if you reach that, the builder tells you to remove some media or questions.

Viewing only

If you are a viewer, the builder opens read-only with a note saying "You can view this form but not edit it." Editors and owners can change everything; see Roles and permissions.

Before you publish

Publishing is refused, with a list of what to fix, when a question has no title, a choice question has no options, a grid has no rows or no columns, the form has no questions at all, or a page in a multi-page form is empty. Publishing can also be refused when the form uses something your plan does not include; see When you reach a limit.
